London skyline time-slip photos

This is another art piece that resembles my ideas for my project. Capturing moments in time.

A circular photo gallery on London's Southbank is capturing images every five seconds for three days.
Gabby Shawcross and Jason Bruges designed the memory project, which is touring the UK.

A route suggestion

Not sure how long this would actually take, maybe too long?
I want to try and include parts that may have different uses at different times. This is why I've tried to include the University campus, the town centre, Mutley high street, North hill and Freedom fields. I'm going to have to walk from home and back again anyway so I thought I may as well include this as the start and end point of the journey.

4D Project Proposal Continued...

I've decided to change my idea slightly...

Title
An investigation into how the journey of one individual differs over time.

Summary [100 Words]
Instead of having multiple people I will just follow the journey of one individual. I will record the same journey throughout the months, including different times of the day, different days, different weather conditions and so on. I think I will do the same journey and then edit it together so that the journey follows the same path but time occurs randomly; or maybe so that the beginning of the journey starts at the first instance of filming and follows through to the last, this will be something that will be easier to decide on when I have some footage.

Development
I hope to engage with the idea of 4D and to see what impact time can take on a journey; by removing the linear aspect of time this will hopefully give some interesting results. Again, as I said previously I hope to see what comes of the filming instead of looking for something to film, I would rather that the investigation lead me than I lead the investigation. So fingers crossed I will find some interesting footage from the filming. I have yet to decide on a route to take, I will have to draw one up that lasts at least half an hour (don't worry final product will not last 30 mins, I will compress the speed) and takes you through some more interesting parts of Plymouth (body guard on standby)! I think it would be easier to be the subject of my filming and film it from my perspective as trying to get someone else to walk around Plymouth for months on end may prove tricky!

Production Timetable
If I'm right the deadline is in week beginning 16/03/09, so I will aim to get a lot of filming done from now till around end of Feb. This should give me enough time to edit together different mixtures of footage to see what works best and to get a presentation sorted. I will hope to get out filming at least once a week with my shiny new camera that I shall be picking up tomorrow. That should give me at least 20 journeys to work with ranging in all different aspects. I may do a few more around Christmas and on weekends. I think it would be a good idea to try and add town into the trip as this is can be a vibrant place. There will be a while when I will be back in Wiltshire for family festivities so I will have to make sure I do enough journeys to cover that gap.

Output
At the moment I intend on producing a short film, although I will look in to using Flash as an interface to make it more interactive.

4D Project Proposal

Title
Investigation in to how different people perceive a journey to the same place differently.

Project Summary
In my investigation I will video the journeys of different people to the same place at different times. The hope of this is to see how a journey is influenced by different factors, including: who the individual is with; the time of day; the weather; other such factors influenced by other people. I will investigate how these factors change an individual's journey. It has occurred to me that a lot of people will avoid certain places as certain times, and it would be interesting to see what stimulates these reactions.

Development
I will film at many different times throughout the term to create a small library of short journey films. I will compare these videos and see how things change throughout the filming time. It may even be interesting to see these displayed together in different windows or even edited together so that the journey stays constant but the time line varies. The idea is not certain yet, some aspects may change; for example it might be a better idea to follow the journey of one individual through the same path at different times.

Short Film - My Everyday Journey to School (2003)

This a short film produced for a piece of academic work. The film shows how the individual makes the journey personal to himself. I'm interested in how people perceive the same journey differently so this is quite similar to what I want to look at.

Shows interpretations of the world around us. For me, this invokes feelings for places we haven't given much thought about. Most spaces merely have a function, but no emotional attachment. There are many different ways the space place may be viewed.

The title translates in English as "Life out of balance" and the movie is meant to provoke thought and introspection, as well as perhaps a call to action, to save the planet (if we can)."

Breif

Below is the brief that we have been given... as yet I don't have many ideas for this. Will post more when my brain starts ticking over.

[Brief]

"And Tralfmadorians don’t see human beings as two-legged creatures, either. They see them as great
millipedes- ‘with babies’ legs at one end and old people’s legs at the other…".

(Kurt Vonnegut, 1970).

“Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.”

The Tempest, ACT I, SCENE I. William Shakespeare.

The notion of trans·for·ma·tion ((trnsfr-mshn, -fôr-) n. in and through emergent (digital) ‘media’, ('a. The act or an instance of transforming. b. The state of being transformed’) enabling an evolution of form, a transformation from solid to the immaterial, the object to the process and the script to the algorithm.

The projects generated for this brief should exhibit ‘symptoms’ of the transformative qualities of digital media whilst retaining critical references to traditional contexts.

“Idly, he wondered what these geometric forms really represented - he knew that only a few seconds earlier they had constituted an immediately familiar part of his everyday existence - but however he rearranged them spatially in his mind, or sought their associations, they still remained a random assembly of geometric forms.”

JG Ballard, The Overloaded Man, 1967.

Individual project work should be informed by a critical/theoretical discourse and demonstrate an awareness of a cultural/technical context. A variety of case studies will be presented in the lecture/screening programme. It is important that your project addresses issues raised within the lectures and is adequately negotiated through tutorial session.

Work will be carried out individually although you may work with small production groups to realize aspects of your projects. A peer assessment form will be used to allocate marks in order to distinguish between individuals within a group production project.

Practical Project: You are required to experiment with digital media to address the issues raised within the lectures and specifically the theme of:

‘Transformation’

Using video cameras, non-linear editing, dome environments, data, mobile phones, locative media, streaming media and other digital facilities available, you are required to explore and innovate the field of digital time-based audio/visual media with consideration of:

• the historical conventions of film and television production

• experimental innovative approaches to these forms by artists/producers over the century

• the opportunities offered by new media forms, synchronous/asynchronous media, multi-location, telematics, etc. You may, for instance, wish to critically consider 'video' in terms of interactive tv, surveillance, documentary, entertainment, and communication/information systems or as a combination of the above.

It is the intention of this module that you experiment and explore the transformative properties of the 'digital'. Take risks, be innovative...

Working as individuals you are required to develop your ideas through a process of small time-based experiments, which should ultimately be resolved through a significant final project. You can realise this experimental work and the project through a number of the possible digital forms such as web based video, interactive video, live video (real time tele-presence) as well as the more conventional recorded video formats/explorations.
